Hillsdale County Railroad Company 1976  by  Doug Leffler
1976 was a notable year.  It was the bi-centenial of the United States...it was the end of the Penn Central and the begining of Conrail...it was the start of the Hillsdale County Railroad Co. (HCRC)...and it was also the number on one of HCRC's engines...an ancient NW-2.

One morning in early 1976, shortly after the start of the HCRC, I decided to follow the 1976, from just south of Hillsdale, to Angola, Indiana, as the brightly painted NW-2 rocked and rolled its way (at 8 mph) over the unkempt ex Penn Central track.  The short train is shown at Quackenbush Road, Bankers, Reading, North Angola, and Angola.

The track today has been rehabilitated and the current operator, Indiana Northeastern, operates at much higher speeds and has a greatly improved customer base.
